Pilot Logbook in the Cloud: Free Google Sheets Template

Ever since I earned my Private Pilot License, I've been using the Sporty's pilot logbook I bought on the same day I finished my introductory flight. It never occurred to me to question it — until the day I asked myself: what if I lost my logbook?

The short answer is: you can't fully recover it. But you have some options.

  • Check with your flight instructors (hopefully they keep records)
  • Check with your flight school or club
  • Pull FAA Form 8710 records from your checkride
  • Hope you made photocopies at some point

None of those are great answers. So I built something better.

A Cloud-Based Pilot Logbook

I created a free Google Sheets pilot logbook template that solves the problem I couldn't find a solution for. Here's why the cloud approach works better than a physical logbook alone:

  • Access anywhere — View and update your logbook from any device, including iPhone and iPad in the cockpit
  • Real-time sharing — Share your log with a CFI or insurance underwriter instantly (anyone with a Google Account)
  • Automatic totals — Time and landings automatically totaled by aircraft category — extremely useful for insurance applications
  • Filter and search — Find specific flights, aircraft, or date ranges instantly
  • Automatic backup — Google Drive handles redundancy; no more "what if I lose it" anxiety

2026 Update: Where Digital Logbooks Stand Today

Since I first built this template in 2013, the digital logbook ecosystem has matured significantly. The Google Sheets approach still works great for pilots who want full control and zero subscription fees. But if you want a purpose-built solution, the current standards are:

  • ForeFlight Logbook — Integrates directly with ForeFlight's flight planning suite; best option if you're already a ForeFlight user
  • Garmin Pilot — Strong integration with Garmin avionics; auto-imports flight data if you're flying with GTN/G1000 glass
  • LogTen Pro — Full-featured, popular with professional pilots building toward ATP minimums
  • Zulu Log — Newer entrant with a clean interface and solid sync

That said, for private pilots who want simplicity and zero cost, Google Sheets is still hard to beat. It's also a great backup layer regardless of which dedicated app you use — export your data periodically and paste it in. Redundancy is good.
